This morning, just before getting ready to leave for my clinics in New Richmond, I took my 2 mares out for a nice trail ride. I live in a rural area and the trails are mostly dirt roads that follow the layout of the fields where local farmers grow corn, potatoes and peat moss for lansdcaping. These trails are wide enough to accommodate an 18 wheeler truck, and we encounter all kinds of interesting traffic - trucks, ag machinery, 4-wheelers, bicycles, horse driven carts (driving is very popular here), and in the winter, convoys of dog sledding teams (they REALLY scare the horses!), and the occasional airplane. As I was riding Menina, my young LBE and ponying Easter, my RBI, I was reflecting on how far both of them had come and how Easter was behaving more and more as a left-brain horse in most situations, and Menina was becoming more willing and obedient, much more centered. Just at that moment, a helicopter which I could hear coming in the distance, appeared right in front of us as it cleared the hill, flying REALLY LOW! So low that I could see the pilot's face, and it literally buzzed us overhead. Yikes! It was so unexpected that I spooked and then immediately thought, oops, got to relax, the horses are going to have trouble. My first thought went to Easter, who immediately dove for grass - really, what's the big deal? Menina got a little bit tense under me, but hey, I spooked first, so we just softly disengaged and turned to keep facing the helicopter, and it was over in a second. How grateful I am once again to have the Parelli program and to have taken the time to do all the prep and confidence building I do with my horses - as Ray Hunt used to say, 'be prepared for the unpredictable and the unthinkable'.
Speaking of happy trails, I am in the process in finalizing my itinerary for my trip out West. I will be following the Transcanada Highway most of the way until I reach BC, where I plan to stay close to the US border rather than drive through Calgary and the high peaks.
I will be stopping in the Ottawa area first, then near Sudbury (Dowling), Wawa, Thunder Bay with a possible extra trip to Sault-Ste-Marie. I will be spending a couple of days at each location teaching students who have requested lessons and workshops as I travel through. Once out of Ontario, my travels will take me across Manitoba with a stop near Portage La Prairie, then Maple Creek in Saskatchewan, through Lethbridge towards Fort Steele and Cranbrook as I get near the end of my journey in Princeton, BC. The whole trip will most likely take 10-14 days and I find myself thinking what a great way to see the country, meeting Parelli students long the way!

Ce matin, juste avant de finaliser mes préparatifs pour mon voyage à New Richmond, j'ai fait une belle randonnée avec mes deux juments. J'habite une région rurale et je me promène surtout sur de longues routes de terre qui longent les champs où les agriculteurs du coin plantent du blé d'inde, des pommes de terre et de la tourbe pour les gazons. Ces pistes sont assez larges pour permettre le passage de camions 18 roues, et nous y faisons toutes sortes de rencontres: des camions, de la machinerie agricole, des 4-roues, des bicyclettes, des attelages (discipline très populaire ici), et l'hiver, des convois de traîneaux à chiens (qui font VRAIMENT peur aux chevaux!), parfois même des avions. Je montais donc Menina, mon Cerveau Gauche Extroveri et je menais en laisse Easter, mon Cerveau Droit Introverti, et je pensais au chemin parcouru avec elles. Easter se comporte de plus en plus comme un Cerveau Gauche dans la majorité des situations, et Menina devient beaucoup plus centrée, plus motivée et obéissante. À ce moment là, un hélicoptère que j'entendais approcher au loin, est apparu juste en face de nous au-dessus de la côte, et il volait VRAIMENT BAS! Tellement bas que j'ai pu voir le visage du pilote, il nous a littéralement survolé en rase-motte. ARGH! Je ne m'y attendais tellement pas que j'ai sursauté, pui immédiatement pensé, il faut relaxer, les chevaux vont réagir. J'ai d'abord regardé Easter, qui en a profité pour baisser immédiatement la tête vers l'herbe appétissante - vraiment, il n'y avait pas de quoi s'inquiéter! Menina est devenue tendue sous moi, mais bon, j'avais quand même sursauté la première, alors je l'ai gentiment désengagée pour continuer à faire face à l'engin qui a disparu, et l'incident était clos en moins d'une seconde. Encore une fois, je remercie le ciel de m'avoir fait découvrir Parelli, et je réalise l'importance d'avoir pris tout ce temps pour bien préparer mes chevaux et des heures passées à bâtir leur confiance - comme Ray Hunt le disait, 'de se préparer pour ce qui est imprévisible et ce qui est impensable'.
En parlant de grandes randonnées, je suis en train de finaliser mon itinéraire vers l'Ouest. Je suivrai la route transcanadienne jusqu'en Colombie-Britannique, et ensuite je vais longer la frontière américaine plutôt que de traverser Calgary et les Hautes Rocheuses.
Mon premier arrêt sera en banlieue d'Ottawa, puis près de Sudbury (Dowling), Wawa, Thunder Bay avec possiblement un détour vers Sault-Ste-Marie. Je vais séjourner deux jours à chaque endroit pour enseigner aux élèves locaux qui m'en ont fait la demande étant donné que je passais dans leur coin de pays. Une fois sortie de l'Ontario, mon voyage me fera traverser le Manitoba avec un arrêt à Portage La Prairie, puis Maple Creek en Saskatchewan, je traverserai Lethbridge pour me diriger vers Fort Steele et Cranbrook, pour finir à ma destination Princeton, C.-B. Le périple devrait durer de 10 à 14 jours, et je me dis, quelle façon extraordinaire de voir notre pays, en rencontrant des élèves Parelli tout au long de ma route!
